Secunda Vita Sailing Academy
The journey of a second life, like any great voyage, often begins with learning the ropes. The Secunda Vita Sailing Academy envisions introducing solid organ transplant recipients, their selfless donors, and courageous donor families to the transformative power and joy of sailing. We believe that stepping aboard a sailboat is a powerful metaphor for life after transplant – a chance to discover new strengths, navigate new horizons, and build unwavering confidence, one wave at a time. This crucial program is currently in development and will be made possible through the generous collaboration of our future sailing school, club, and private boat owner partners.
Our Vision for Your Journey:
Our Academy is designed to offer a supportive and accessible pathway into the world of sailing, fostering:
Renewed Confidence: Reclaim your physical and mental capabilities through hands-on learning in a safe environment.
Physical & Mental Well-being: The fresh air, focus, and gentle exertion of sailing contribute to rehabilitation and stress reduction.
Supportive Community: Connect with others who share similar life experiences, building camaraderie and lasting friendships.
Skill Development: Gain tangible, certified sailing skills that open doors to lifelong adventure.
Our Collaborative Model: Charting a Course Together
The Secunda Vita Sailing Academy envisions operating through a unique and vital partnership model. As a newly established non-profit, the Foundation does not currently own its own fleet of sailboats. We are actively seeking and developing collaborations with established sailing schools, generous yacht clubs, and private boat owners to secure the essential vessels, instructors, and expertise that will allow us to offer our programs.
Seeking Partnerships with Local Sailing Schools: We aim to partner with certified schools, leveraging their existing infrastructure, experienced instructors, and well-maintained training fleets.
Engaging Yacht Clubs: We are reaching out to local clubs for potential access to their facilities, community boats, and members willing to volunteer as mentors or instructors.
Connecting with Private Boat Owners: We seek generous individuals willing to loan their vessels for specific Academy sessions or community sails, offering unique and personal learning experiences.
This collaborative approach will enable us to direct more of our resources directly to participant scholarships and program development, ensuring the highest impact for every contribution.
What We Plan to Offer: Accessible & Adaptive Sailing Classes
Through our valued future partnerships, the Secunda Vita Sailing Academy aims to provide comprehensive, introductory sailing instruction. Our programs will be designed to accommodate varying physical needs and skill levels, ensuring a safe and rewarding experience for everyone.
We anticipate offering classes and experiences such as:
Beginner Classes (e.g., ASA 101 Basic Keelboat): Learn the fundamentals of sailing, including nomenclature, basic knots, sail trim, steering, and essential safety procedures. No prior experience will be necessary – just a desire to learn!
Intermediate Skills (e.g., ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising): Build upon foundational knowledge, learning more advanced boat handling, navigation, and cruising techniques.
Customized Workshops: Special sessions focused on specific skills, safety, or short, guided sails designed for social connection and enjoyment.
Key Features (once established):
Certified Instructors: All classes will be led by experienced, certified sailing instructors from our partner organizations or qualified volunteers.
Small Class Sizes: Ensuring personalized attention and a comfortable learning environment.
Adaptive Approach: We will work closely with our partners to ensure boats and instruction can be adapted to individual needs.
Safety First: Comprehensive safety briefings and protocols will be at the forefront of every Academy session, adhering to professional standards.
Future Scholarships: Removing Barriers to the Helm
We believe that financial barriers should never prevent a transplant recipient, donor, or donor family member from experiencing the transformative benefits of sailing. The Secunda Vita Foundation is committed to offering scholarships (pending available funding) to cover or significantly reduce the costs of our Academy programs.
Impact: Future scholarships will make participation possible through the generosity of our supporters, allowing recipients to focus purely on learning and healing.
How to Apply: Information on eligibility and the application process for future scholarships will be made available once programs are launched.
Who We Plan to Serve:
Our Academy aims to welcome:
Solid organ transplant recipients (Liver, Kidney, Heart, Lung) who are medically cleared for activity.
Living organ donors.
Donor family members.
No prior sailing experience will be required! Just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
